In our high schools, the school counselors and administrators are involved in setting up a plan for "at risk" or students with "special needs." Therefore, I don't know the exact protocol or procedures that are practiced. I am aware that a number of programs implemented with the intention of integrating these students into regular classrooms and ideally into the real world. We have various designations for tested students; which also determines on what funding and support they will be given from the government.
Students who can function independently but struggle in comprehending class material or need additional time and assistance to complete their assignments, are given a "skills" block to receive aid and study plan from a Resource Teacher. Depending on the student, teachers may write Adaptations and make Modifications to help the student meet learning objectives. There are also students that are scheduled with SSWs (School Support Workers) who escort and give additional guidance to the students in regular classrooms. Then depending on the students' strengths, some classes may not require the additional support at all. Similarly, they are responsible for themselves during break and lunch times. Then there are students who will not benefit from a regular classroom education. These students who have extreme learning disabilities are placed together in their own classes taught by either specialized teachers or regular teachers. Eventually, depending on their progress that have been monitored by the Resource Teacher, their goals will be changed throughout the term and year.
